About the Community
Shore Thing started in 2021 as a surf-therapy program supporting mental & ocean health. Now, as an official ISTO contributor, we’ve grown into a community built around one truth: in this region, people live fast - ambitious, driven, constantly “on,” or running on empty. We offer a place to slow down, breathe, and leave stress at the shore. Why flow matters: catching a wave is joyful and uplifting; surfing and other ocean sports demands full focus, pulling you away from negative thoughts. This deep concentration known as flow is linked to improved mood and emotional relief. The small wins in learning to surf builds confidence that carries into everyday life, and doing this together creates meaningful social bonds. Our work is rooted in Blue Mind, the science the idea that being in, on, or near water positively affects mental health. As the Gulf doesn’t have year-round waves, we go beyond surfing. We run SUP sessions, partner with a local scuba school for slow, immersive underwater experiences, and host annual paddle-outs. When waves arrive, we return to seasonal surf therapy sessions. We are a community powered by ocean conservation at its core. Without preserving our biodiversity and the health of the ocean, we can't survive.
